Writing for Rights is a series of short play readings to benefit New Sanctuary Coalition, an NYC-based organization working to stop the inhumane system of deportations and detentions in this country.
Writing for Rights features 10-minute plays by Ashley Croce, Andre Ford, John Barrow, Kaela Mei-Shing Garvin, KJ Jarboe, and Lizzy May; direction by Nathan Luttrull, Ray DuBois, Ciana Proto, Nicholas Polonio, Ella Mora, and Grace Herman-Holland.
Ticketing will be cash or Venmo at the door of each event. Pay what you can—no one will be turned away for lack of funds. 100% of proceeds will go directly to New Sanctuary Coalition

Ashley Croce is an actor, writer, and director living in Brooklyn. Regionally she has worked with Hartford Stage, Commonwealth Shakespeare, and Berkshire Theatre Festival. She is a cofounder of The Shrill Collective, a feminist theatre collective that seeks to amplify women’s voices while raising money for organizations that help girls and women. Favorite projects with Shrill have been acting in Dry Land, directing Trifles (remount this January!), and writing for Firsts. She recently adopted a tuxedo kitten named Winona and has a pineapple plant named Penelope.
Nathan Luttrull is an NYC-based theater and film director originally from Dallas, Texas. He has directed and produced numerous short films, including A Little Less Help (Baretower Forge Film Festival, East New York Film Festival, & others) and The Serpent in the Apple (Kapow International Film Festival, The North Europe International Film Festival-London, The Laugh or Die Film Festival, & others). He has also worked with Boomerang Theater Company (The Sheen Center) and Hamlet Isn’t Dead (The Center at West Park). Nathan graduated from The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.
Andre Ford, M.S.W. is the HSE Program Specialist for the CUNY Fatherhood Academy, where he prepares students to successfully acquire their HSE diploma(s). He is also an adjunct lecturer in the Human Services Department at LaGuardia Community College. Before joining the LAGCC community, he managed the Education and Vocational Training program at Covenant House New York, a non- profit organization that works with young adults. This is where he developed a passion for working on behalf of at risk youth, specifically those who identify as LGBTQ. As a playwright produced in New York City, his plays have explored the intersection of “sexuality and spirituality” in marginalized groups.
Ray DuBois is a classically trained actor, director, and teaching artist based in the Berkshires/NYC. Select acting/directing credits include For Colored Girls, Comedy of Errors, The Colored Museum, As You Like It, Love’s Labour’s Lost, Julius Caesar, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet, Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, Romeo & Juliet, Arcadia, King Lear, Taming of the Shrew, and The Tempest. Ray serves as the Founding Artistic Director of Black Shakespeare Project (blackshakespeareproject.org. In addition to studying Theatre and Voice at DePauw University, Ray has and continues to study with internationally renowned master teachers at Shakespeare & Company: Center for Actor Training.
John Barrow grew up in Georgia and now lives in New York City. His full-length play, Lillian, Paula, Carson, was named winner of the 2017 Southern Playwrights Competition. His one-act comedy, Richard Nixon’s Neighbors, was broadcast by Shoestring Radio Theatre in February 2018. His plays have been seen at Stonewall Rep, Ensemble Studio Theater, The Morningside Players, The Bechdel Group (all in New York), New Southern Theatre (Nashville), Key West Theater Festival, Live Ink Theatre (Fernandina Beach), Dad’s Garage (Atlanta), Emerald Theatre (Memphis). Residencies: Yaddo, William Flanagan Center (Albee Foundation).
Ciana Proto is a New York native and holds a B.A in Theatre Arts from Drew University. She trained with Tectonic Theatre Project as a co-intentional devisor, writer, and performer, and was a member of the Orchard Project’s Core Company Directing and Producing Program. She currently writes plays in her living room and volunteers with the 52nd Street Project, directing for the Teen Ensemble. She most recently debuted a reading of her play ‘My Technicolor House’ at Dixon Place. She is grateful and excited to be part of Writing for Rights!
Kaela Mei-Shing Garvin is a queer mixed Asian American writer, producer, and performer. Kaela’s a founding member of Undiscovered Countries, a Brooklyn-based incubator of new and developing interdisciplinary art. Kaela’s produced and conducted interviews for Hearabouts (Asian American Midwest Radio), written essays for The Clyde Fitch Report, Reappropriate & Lady Parts, romance novels for A&E Media, and webisodes for Super Deluxe. Kaela is the recipient of four playwriting awards from the Kennedy Center. MFA Candidate, Indiana University; BFA, NYU.
Nicholas Polonio is a theater director based in Brooklyn, NY. He has adapted and directed plays including Late Fame, A Phoenix Too Frequent, and Isaac’s Eye. He has developed work at institutions including New York Theater Workshop, Theater for a New Audience, and Red Bull Theater. Most recently, he served as the assistant director on the Broadway transfer of Slave Play. He is an alum of the Williamstown Theater Festival Directing Corps, the Conservatory at Shakespeare’s Globe, and the Young Vic Genesis Program. 2016 YoungArts Finalist in Spoken Theater. BFA in Directing from Rutgers Mason-Gross School of the Arts.
KJ Jarboe is a playwright and dramaturg from Southeast Kansas. Dramaturg credits include Skull for a Skull by Lucas Miller presented at Free State Festival 2016 and script reading for Kitchen Dog Theater and Playwrights Foundation. KJ is also on The Theatre Times’ team and helped develop Performap.com, an Interactive Digital Map of Global Theatre and Performance Festivals. She holds a BA in Theatre from the University of Kansas—Soured Milk marks her playwriting debut.
Ella Mora (she/they) is a Brooklyn-Based producer, director & performer. Directing Credits: Chelsea Rep, PlayLAB, E-Merging Artist Winterfest. Producing Credits: The Gap at The Tank, Summer Fresh Festival 2018,123, a play about abandonment & ballroom dancing at The Wild Project (which raised over $3k for local non-profit Children of Promise), and Music For Migrant Rights (which raised over $600 for the ACLU and RAICES). Favorite Performing Credits: Hartford Stage Co., Williamstown Theatre Fest, New York Theatre Workshop, and anytime she gets to play a queer character. Member of AEA and Ring of Keys.
Lizzy May devises theater work with young people in Chicago and has founded three performing arts programs at inner-city schools. Lizzy works with an ensemble of professional actors and high school students as the Executive Director of Backyard Chicago Ensemble. Her original work as a playwright and director has been seen in venues throughout Chicago and at the Midtown International Theater Festival in NYC.
Grace Herman-Holland is an NYC-based applied theater artist, director, deviser, and teaching artist. Recent directing includes Romeo and Juliet (MITU 580), Eyes of a Blue Dog (Dixon Place), Genesis 22 (Governors Island), and Revel’s End (Cap 21). Grace has also worked at Ars Nova, HERE Arts Center, the Grotowski Institute, Fresh Ground Pepper, and the Kyoto Art Center. She is a teaching artist with the Stella Adler Outreach Program and the Possibility Project; a member of Dance Japan, a nihon buyo (Japanese dance) company; and the artistic director of The Woolgatherers Theater Group.
